Latvia followed in Ukraines footsteps by introducing a ban on Russian state television broadcasts, citing Russian media’s “biased coverage of the Ukraine crisis”. The EU country’s authorities are planning to create their own TV channel for the Russian-speaking minority which makes up about 40% of Latvia’s population to prevent “social discord” that Russian news create, according to them. Meanwhile, the Voice of Russia’s Ekaterina Blinova believes that the Latvian government is trying to blame Russian media for its own domestic national policy failure, turning a blind eye on how the annual Waffen-SS veterans’ marches contribute to interethnic tensions.
