Laurie Barlow, we thank you for your important input and the link to San Marino Residential Design Guidelines (which SMH posted on 4/10/14 as well). You are also to be applauded for all your community service over the years, and especially your work on this important document. Although we fully endorse support of Pasadena Heritage, there needs to be a pool of volunteers and supporters fully committed to preservation in San Marino. We are happy to work with Sue Mossman, and if we could be under their umbrella we would certainly make more of an impact. Here are further thoughts: 1. This great booklet of guidelines was published in 1999; it is primarily focused on new construction but gives helpful information on matching the styles for residents requesting an addition to an existing structure; it should be available to every agent and it should be updated. (We’d like a LARGE portion of a new edition dedicated to preservation); 2. Upon quick review the only place in the document which we find specifically uses the term “preservation” refers to trees, but realize it has wonderful information on the various styles of homes with wonderful illustrations by local architect John Tegtmeyer; 3. As DRC has told us time & time again, their hands are tied regarding protecting an existing residence, and that is the focus of SMH; 4. Ideally the City would agree to photograph and forward the pictures of proposed demolitions within two weeks of the date the “new construction” applications are submitted. 5. On any individual application, only residents within a certain radius will be officially notified of a DRC meeting; 6. All residents need to know exactly when the agenda is posted in order to have sufficient time for research before the meetings (We are awaiting a response from our city clerk on the policy and/or legal protocol). In addition, the notice board needs to be returned to a visible place at entry to city hall, not hidden around the corner as also reported to SMH Facebook friends on April 10th.
