From Laurie Roberts: You can put some of your tax money toward making sure that a foster kid gets the chance to be a kid. “You can put money into the hands of people who are working with kids and touching families every day and we will change their lives,” said Kris Jacober, executive director of the Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation. The Legislature last year created a new tax credit that allows Arizona taxpayers to divert a portion of their state taxes to certain non-profits that help foster children. A single taxpayer can donate up to $400 and a couple filing jointly can give $800 to one of 23 qualifying non-profits. Do it by Dec. 31 and your 2014 state tax bill is then reduced by the amount youve donated. You dont have to itemize your taxes to get the credit, which means anyone can do it. It doesn’t replace any tax credit you may be giving to the schools. And it could make a real difference to a kid who could surely use a hand. Jacobers organization is among the 23 groups that qualify for foster-care tax-credit contributions. The 31-yearold non-profit was started by four Arizonans who sat on the Foster Care Review Board and thought there must be a way to get foster children a few of the things that other kids get. Things like dance lessons or the chance to play on a basketball team or go to camp. Like scholarships to college or a bike or money for that sixth-grade field trip to Catalina Island that everybody else in your class will be attending while you stay home because there is no one to pay for it.
