Lawless capital, hopeless citizen battling to survive Staff Reporter ITANAGAR, Aug 08: The brutal assault on Er Narang Gumbo, executive engineer (E) in broad daylight at Damsite. Naharlagun over Panchayat election related matter has once against exposed darker side of state. Er Gumbo is currently posted at Department of Power, Sangram division under Kurung Kumey district. According to the Naharlagun police, on 6th August, around 4 in the evening Er. Gumbo and his wife were coming back after meeting relatives at Damsite when the incident occurred. On their way back to Naharlagun bazaar at Bailey bridge, Damsite they were stopped by group of people in Scorpio vehicle. The group attacked Er Gumbo and caused grievous injury. They even manhandled his wife and kicked her several times while she was trying to save her husband. As his wife starting shouting for help, some nearby people tried to help. But group did not stop and continued to attack him with intention to cause death inflicting injuries. Somehow they managed to inform police and with help of nearby citizen their life was saved. As per capital police Er Gumbo was attacked by group of people lead by husband of a woman who unsuccessfully contested for ZPM seat from Nyapin Panchayat segment in the recently concluded Panchayat election. She was disqualified from contesting as her name was listed as a casual employee of electrical department, Sangram division. Her husband had put immense pressure on Er Gambo to issue resignation letter in back date so that she can contest. On the other hand, members of opponent party had also put pressure on him not to issue such letter. Angry over decision of officer not to issue resignation letter in back date, Er Gumbo was brutally attacked. The incident has added to the notorious stigma associated with Kurung Kumey district. Government officials dread to work in the said district because of lawlessness and total breakdown of system. In recent month incidents of attack on govt officials have also considerably risen in capital complex and districts around it. The state government has totally failed to ensure safety and security of citizen in capital complex. Government officials are often caught between various interest groups and become target if they don’t heed to their demands. Till the filing of this report, the accused have not been arrested. However capital police has assured that sooner accused will be arrested. Meanwhile the members of All Narang Welfare society have condemned the incident of assault on one of its fellow member. This incident is highly deplorable and condemnable by each and every sections of the society cutting across the communities and is a grim reminder of the fact that no one is safe in the state capital. We ardently urge the law enforcing agencies to take strong and proactive steps by immediately arresting all the culprits involved in the assault and to bring them to book under the appropriate sections of laws of the land, the society added in a release. It is high time that the law enforcing agencies must flex its muscles to deter any such incidents involving megalomaniacs and trigger happy elements in the capital who think they can do anything to anyone with impunity.
