LeVar Burton is best-known for his amazing role in the series “Roots” over thirty years ago. He also took on a prominent spot in “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” building a pretty remarkable career in the process. But time has stood still for Burton when it comes to being asked about his important role in “Roots.” Burton became annoyed recently when New York Magazine asked him about the film “Django Unchained,” and Quentin Tarantino’s critique that the film was “inauthentic.” “When you look at Roots, nothing about it rings true in the storytelling, and none of the performances ring true for me either,” Tarantino said after making “Django Unchained.” “It didn’t move me because it claimed to be something it wasn’t.” Burton didn’t like what Tarantino had to say about Roots, and was overwhelmingly clear with his disgust. He says that there is no way that Tarantino can claim that his film was more realistic than Roots, since it wasn’t even a real story. “Django Unchained is a fantasy, let’s be clear,” Burton said. “And when Quentin Tarantino says thatDjango is more real than Roots, I call bullsh*t. I got nothing against him, but don’t go there, okay? Don’t go there, Quentin.” “Roots” is being remade by the History Channel, which is sure to modernize the film without giving the generic bells and whistles that we might normally see in a Hollywood production. The decision to remake the film has re-ignited conversation within the African American community, which has become hungry to reclaim its history. Burton also spoke about Tarantino’s decision to satirize the slave narrative. “Too many people who look like me bled and died for you to have the opportunity to satirize the slave narrative. There’s a place for satire in culture. Taken at face value, as a piece of satire, I went and enjoyed it. It was fun. Let’s just not get it twisted. Django was not real.”
