Leader of Hong Kongs Occupy Central pro-democracy - TopicsExpress

Leader of Hong Kongs Occupy Central pro-democracy movement Benny Tai, has announced the launch of a mass disobedience campaign. This happened as a result of China cracking down against the protests, making mass arrests and restricting access to the protests and protest site. Students and activists oppose Beijing decision to rule out fully democratic elections in 2017. China decided in August that candidates for the 2017 chief executive election would have to be approved by a nominating committee: A decision activists claim undermines democracy. China is bound by the Hong Kong Treaty to guarantee its high degree of autonomy fifty years after the 1997 handover, except in foreign and defence affairs. The crack down flies in the face of this treaty provision. Igonikon Jack, USA
