Leadership Training for Officers About twenty civil servants will soon attend two weeks training at the Leadership Academy based in Pudong, Shanghai in the People’s Republic of China. Delegates from the Academy paid a courtesy visit to the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, Forests, Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management, Mr Inia Seruiratu this morning at the Ministry of Fisheries and Forests Headquarters at Takayawa Building in Suva. Mr Seruiratu said that it is imperative for the officers to learn more on leadership training. “Government has set out good plans but it’s the officers that need to make the plans work and the training will of course enhance their skills on good leadership especially in their various Ministries and departments,” said Mr Seruiratu. “With the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forests, there are a lot of technical people who have been used to their field for quite some time now and of course, this training will be a major boost to their confidence in decision making as well as leadership,” added Mr Seruiratu. According to Public Service Commission Permanent Secretary, Parmesh Chand, Fiji has been looking forward to this opportunity for sending its officers abroad. “We will be sending officers who deal mostly with rural development to learn more on managing risks, people, conflicts, staff and these are all important components in becoming good leaders,” said Mr Chand. Deputy Director General and Associate Professor for the Academy, Harry Genfa Liu says that they are looking forward to work with their counterparts in Fiji. “Be rest assured that they will be given the best training and resources and they will return with lots of knowledge which can be utilized within the civil service,” said Mr Liu. The first batch of students is expected to leave the country in Mid September to Early October this year.
