Leading on from a friends musings about whether young singers should have to do theory, and how the rigour of it can put some of them off, it got me thinking. Many singers make a reasonable proportion of their income from being on the church and pro-choir circuits both of which require musicianship skills. Fewer singers get to be solo opera singers. So... Music colleges should be teaching more survival skills including how to sight-read and learn things self-sufficiently, and should not be perpetuating the myth that every soprano will get to be Mimi in La Boheme and giving everyone lots of spoonfeedy opera coaching.
