Leah and I finally watched The Wolf of Wall Street last night. I enjoyed it. Several things occur to me about the film. First, its just too long (like these comments). Lots of good material but by the end I was honestly ready for the ending I knew was coming. Too much of a good thing. It doesnt help that its a reboot of the theme from Goodfellas, The Aviator, and Casino - larger than life character fails. That said, its pretty darned good. Second, I think 200 years from now Scorsese will be uttered in the same breath as Mozart and Shakespeare and college kids will study his works and think about how his works impacted our societal views on the issues he addressed. That said, the scene with McGonaughey and Di Caprio getting lunch is one of those rare moments of just perfect dialogue executed by consummate actors that you just cant miss. The movie has flaws but that scene does not. 200 years from now that scene will still work and the kids will get it even if they have to get some help with the words they no longer use. Third (and a corollary to 2) is that McGonaughey is the real deal. I havent always appreciated him but hes surprised me a few times now and that scene is just masterful (I also thought Mud was really good and am looking forward to Dallas Buyers Club). Im prepared to acknowledge that him going face to face with Di Caprio is this generations equivalent of two of its finest actors squaring off. And that makes that scene even more memorable. Its the equivalent of Pacino and De Niro appearing in the same scene (and not just the same movie) in their prime. Overall I give it two thumbs up and it goes on the list of movies Ill see again. Not Goodfellas or the Godfather, but really good.
