LeapRus is the name of the new base camp on Mount Elbrus realized at 4000 meters above sea level, this summer. Italian designs and manufactures modular prefabricated buildings with minimal environmental impact, boasts the great success of the New Hut Gervasutti (Mont Blanc, Courmayeur, 2011) By Leap company in Turin. The creation establishment of the new camp on Mount Elbrus is promoted by NCMC (North Caucasus Mountain Club), a Russian company that promotes and develops tourism in the North Caucasus region. The LeapRus camp will be located along the normal climbing route, on the immense glacier of the south side, a few hundred meters far from the historical refuge Priut 11, destroyed from fire in the 90s of last century. Mount Elbrus is the highest peak of geographical Europe. It is located in Russia, in the central section of the the Caucasus Mountains range, between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. It is a dormant volcano characterized by two 5650 meters high twin peaks, overlooking the mountains all around. "After an inspection which took place during the summer of 2012 and an accurate design phase - the architects Luca Gentilcore and Stefano Testa explain - we are now producing four new prefabricated structures that will be transported and installed directly on Mount Elbrus thus avoiding all the traditional stages of construction sites". Fact sheet: 19 modules (type s1) composite shell, with 46 beds, living areas with large panoramic windows a living/ dining room with kitchen 13 modules (new type s2), that will host a sophisticated system for the production of energy and toilets “The structures of the new Alpine resort - the architects underline - will be equipped with cutting-edge technologies in the field of sustainability: an energy stand-alone high efficiency hybrid system with an innovative storage salt battery, HVAC with heat recovery, LED lighting, under floor heating adapt to the very low temperatures given by altitude, an innovative system for the recycling o water through the melting of snow: for the sake of intelligent management any equipment is remotely controlled and regulated, even by satellite. Finally, considering the natural environment in which the station will be installed, in order to cut down pollution we chose to use a special organic waste filtering plant, ideal for cold climates”. The architects conclude: “To get the self-sufficiency of the station has been our leading objective in getting the highest performance in terms of energy efficiency on the highest mountain in Europe”.
