Learn Our History Today: On August 2, 1876, Famous gunslinger Wild Bill Hickok was murdered in Deadwood, South Dakota by a young gunslinger named Jack McCall. McCall crept up behind Hickok as he was playing a game of cards, and shot him in the back of the head, killing him instantly. McCall would later be tried and hanged for the crime. According to legend, at the time of his death, the cards Wild Bill was holding were a pair of black aces and a pair of black eights. Ever since then, the combination of those cards together has been known as the Dead Man’s Hand. Also, On August 2, 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait, plowing over ineffective defensive forces. This invasion of Kuwait prompted the United States, among other nations, to come to the aid of neighboring nation, Saudi Arabia, who feared an invasion by Iraq. In the end, over 700,000 troops came to the aid of Saudi Arabia, in addition to demanding that Iraq retreat from Kuwait. They gave Iraq a deadline of January 15, 1991, to withdraw from Kuwait. Iraq would eventually refuse, prompting the United States to start a war with Iraq, which lasted for six weeks and cost over 500 Americans killed or wounded.
