Learn Our History Today: On June 29, 1966, during the Vietnam War, aircraft from the United States Air Force bombed the North Vietnamese cities of Hanoi and Haiphong, crippling oil depots located near the population centers. The operation was thought to be a massive success, with CIA estimating that 70% of all North Vietnam’s oil facilities had been destroyed on the bombing mission. Little did they know that the North Vietnamese had anticipated an attack and distributed their oil to different places all across the country. Also, on June 29, 1972, the Supreme Court ruled that the death penalty was unconstitutional and it was abolished. The court said that the death penalty qualified as cruel and unusual punishment because the death penalty was employed in inconsistent ways, especially in regard to race, and therefore was in violation of the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution. This was the very first time that the United States had ruled against capital punishment. The abolishment of the death penalty only lasted four years however, and in 1976 it was reinstated under a “model of guided discretion.”
