Led by the Spirit One of the more difficult concepts to grasp in Christianity is understanding the work of the Holy Spirit. This is definitely something that seems to take on a supernatural nature, often confusing the most dedicated follower. We seem to understand the concept of the Father and Son because we have something to compare it to in real life. We can grasp the “loving father” idea because most of us have experienced this. Yet we seem to struggle a bit when we are taught that the Holy Spirit lives in us and works with us to become stronger believers. When I think of how the Spirit moves in me, I will often feel that my conscience, or my sense of right and wrong, is driven by this Spirit. If we stop and listen as we move through our daily routine, we may find that although we know what is good and what is right, we often make another choice because it is not widely accepted, much easier or popular. Deep down, we feel that our actions are justified because everyone else does the same. We feel guilty, but only for a short time, because the world does not want us to dwell on the prospect of doing what is right. The Apostle Paul mentions this in the Book of Galatians. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Let us not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another.” Galatians 5:22-26(NASB) Paul is telling us to let our actions speak louder than our words. If we are following the Holy Spirit and experiencing the “fruits of the Spirit,” all of the attributes we strive for will come to pass. The trick is following when and where the Spirit leads you. It can be difficult because the world sometimes moves in a different direction, down a road that leads to what seems a more prosperous future, an easier lifestyle and a less stressful existence. In my mind, I would prefer all the things God promises as opposed to what the world offers. Walking in the Spirit means we are following the path God has for us, not the path the world wants us all to walk along. It takes a great deal of effort and personal fortitude to stick with the right path once we are on it. It will be full of potholes because it has become “the road less travelled.” But, as Christians, we know it’s the right path. When we allow ourselves to be led by the spirit, we are following God’s plan for our lives. “in the world, not of the world”
