Left us on this day (Aug. 17) in 1973: baritone singer & choreographer Paul Williams (suicide, age 34), best remembered as a founding member of pivotal ’60s R&B vocal group, The Temptations; with David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Otis Williams & Melvin Franklin, he was part of The Classic Five lineup responsible for some of modern music’s greatest songs; Paul served as main lead singer in the groups earliest years, including their 1961 debut single Oh, Mother of Mine; some of his later leads included Just Another Lonely Night (1965), No More Water in the Well (1967), Hey Girl (1969) & his signature song, Dont Look Back (1965); the best dancer in the group, he choreographed their routines (also for The Supremes); personal problems & failing health forced Paul to retire in 1971; as a member of the Temptations, he was posthumously inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame in 1989 & into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999...(Paul on lead vocals in this clip...)
