Left us on this day (Nov. 12) in 1997: Tucson, Arizona-based guitarist & singer-songwriter Rainer Ptacek (brain tumor & lymphoma, age 46); while never rising above cult status, his guitar technique, which incorporated blues-based Dobro & National Steel slide guitar with finger-picking, tape loops & electronic manipulation, earned him a reputation as a musicians musician & the admiration of such notables as Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top (Billy provided him with recording time at his own studio in Houston) & Robert Plant (Rainer played on sessions related to Roberts 1993 Fate of Nations album); when he became seriously ill in early-1996, the benefit/tribute album The Inner Flame: Rainer Ptacek Tribute attracted such participants as Plant, Jimmy Page, PJ Harvey, Emmylou Harris, Victoria Williams, Jonathan Richman, Howe Gelb (Giant Sand) & others…
