Left us on this day (Oct. 14) in 2011: US songwriter, producer & arranger Paul Leka (lung cancer, age 68); he scored hits with The Lemon Pipers (for whom he co-wrote their 1968 US #1 hit Green Tambourine, credited as the first Bugglegum chart topper), sunshine-pop band The Peppermint Rainbow (he produced, arranged & orchestrated their 69 US #32 Will You Be Staying After Sunday?) & studio creation Steam, who scored a multiplatinum 1969 US #1 hit with the Leka co-written Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye (Paul is credited in particular with writing the well-known Na Na Hey Hey chorus); he also worked with baroque-pop band The Left Banke, producing & arranging the majority of the songs on their 1968 sophomore album, The Left Banke Too; Paul worked in the industry into the 80s, writing & arranging for the likes of Jimmie Spheeris, Harry Chapin, REO Speedwagon, Lori Lieberman & Gloria Gaynor…
