Left us on this day (Oct. 29) in 1971: Southern Rock guitar great Duane Skydog Allman (motorcycle accident, age 24); he began as a hot session player on many classic records of the late-’60s, including Wilson Picket’s 1968 cover of Hey Jude, earning him an invite to the Derek & The Dominos sessions where he added his signature sound to Eric Claptons on the Layla album; he also played on hit recordings by Aretha Franklin, Percy Sledge, Clarence Carter & Boz Scaggs; he & brother Gregg formed The Allman Brothers Band in Macon, Georgia in 1969 which grew into one of Americas most influential groups - albums like their 69 self-titled debut, their breakthrough live double-LP At Fillmore East (1971) & Eat A Peach (1972, recording was in progress at the time of Duanes passing) are considered landmark recordings of the era; while the band is considered a principal architect of Southern Rock, they also incorporated elements of blues, jazz, & country music - their live shows pioneered (along with The Grateful Dead) the jam band-style of improvisation & instrumentals; Rolling Stone ranked Greg #2 on their list of The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, just behind Jimi Hendrix; in 1998 the Georgia State Legislature passed a resolution designating a stretch of State Highway 19, US 41, within Macon as Duane Allman Boulevard in his honor; 2013 saw the release of the seven-CD box set anthology, Skydog…
