Left us on this day (Oct. 8) in 1990: UK drummer B.J. Wilson (following an extended illness, age 43), best remembered for his work with UK progressive band, Procol Harum, noted for their melding of baroque & classical influences with blues, R&B, soul & rock; besides leader Gary Brooker, B.J. was the only constant band member from 1967 until their initial break-up in 1977 (although he joined just after their debut & biggest hit, A Whiter Shade Of Pale, had been recorded); alhough he tended to fly under the radar, many consider him one of the greatest rock drummers of his era - he notoriously declined an offer by Jimmy Page & Robert Plant to be the original drummer for Led Zeppelin; as a session player, B.J. can be heard on the likes of Frankie Miller’s Double Trouble, AC/DC’s Flick The Switch & the film score of The Rocky Horror Picture Show; he also toured in Joe Cocker’s band during the early-’80s & was instrumental in arranging Joes 1968 UK #1 hit version of With A Little Help From My Friends; B.J.s last recorded work was on the 1985 Gary Brooker solo album, Echoes in the Night...(this 1971 performance of Simple Sister provides some nice insights into his technique…) (This & more featured today at Roch Parisiens Rocon Communications music chat page...)
