Left us on this day (Sept. 17) in 1951: Chicago boogie-woogie jazz pianist Jimmy Yancey (stroke as a complication of diabetes, age 57), best remembered as a pioneer of raucous, rapid-fire, eight-to-the-bar piano style; most prominent during the 40s (his first recordings in 1939 created a considerable stir in blues & jazz circles), he was an early influence on rocknroll & was recognized as such when he was inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame in 1986; he also holds the distinction of recording (along with his wife Estelle Mama Yancey) the first album ever released by Atlantic Records, in 1951; throughout his life, he kept his job as a groundskeeper for the Chicago White Sox…
