Leftover Sorcery Food is expensive; when was the last time YOUR shopping bill went down, or for that matter stayed the same? Why then do we throw away so much? I don’t know either, but I do know how to make the most out of what is bought. Whenever I buy food I have already thought about what I can do with it (I plan my meals for each day) and I don’t mean just left somewhere to go bad and smelly. Yes, we are talking about using ‘leftovers’. Not the sort that is on the plate at the end of a meal (you could) but the portions of food you did not serve up at all, those left in the kitchen be it meat or vegetable. Here’s the problem; some people will use them and others won’t as they believe they are unfit to eat. The truth is they are more than edible! Yes it can get boring eating the same thing even the day after. Yet with a little imagination food can go a long way. Let’s have a look at a few ideas:- For Sunday dinner you, as a family, sit down to a nice roast joint of meat, say Beef. Not all is eaten that day and it is wrapped up and put back in storage. Yes, this Beef needs using but how? They don’t like two meals the same in two days. The answer is we don’t make the same meal, we make a different meal! Take that Beef, yes take it and cut and slice it up! Go and grab a Skillet or Wok and throw in some vegetables (frozen or not) and some rice or pasta (cooked first) and finally some or all of the Beef and you have yourself a Beef stir fry. Do the same but in a pot with some stock and cook it in the oven, and then you have a casserole. Cook it on the hob and you have a stew! Use a thick Tomato base (with chunks of Tomato), some Garlic, Basil, Marjoram, Oregano and you have a simple yet beautiful stew. Raid your cupboards and add new herbs, spices and other flavourings. This can be done with any meat; Pork, Chicken, Turkey, Seafood, Lamb to mention a few. Any of these can be chopped up or put in a food processor to make ground/minced meat (maybe not so much the fish!) and then used to make a Chilli con carne, Spaghetti Bolognese, Tacos and so much more. By realizing that meat especially is still meat and can be cut, diced, sliced and ground down the possibilities of what to do with it open up to you. Next time you look at that joint left over, smile and unleash your imagination on what to do with it next! It may make meals for days to come and save on your shopping bill! With some imagination and planning vegetables can be used in much the same way. Boiled Potatoes can be roasted or fried as can just about any vegetable. Go on; let your mind run riot.
