Lent 2014 Day 5 - We suffer greatly from the poor choices we make. Especially when we discover the grave consequences that accompany such moments of bad decisions or fleeting pleasure. We suffer from fractured relationships that wound the soul. Usually these emotional wounds fester and we nurse them into gangrenous hate and anger. We suffer too from guilt and shame, at things we should or should not have done. Sometimes because of a loss of trust in people, we end up believing only in ourselves, only to discover that we are our own worst enemies. The greatest tragedy is when we mistakenly resign ourselves that we cannot put anything right, we worry that our actions are unforgivable, that we too can’t find it in us to forgive ourselves because they are too terrible to bring before God. Psalm 51:4 – Against you and you only have I sinned, and done what is evil in your sight. This is what the Bible calls sin – a violation against God and puts the issue where it should be – that sin is really the breach in the relationship between us and God. When we choose to turn away from what God says, we will eventually experience the full weight of what we have done and will feel crushed inside. We lose the sense of peace and joy that comes with right living. But God is the God of second chances …there is nothing so bad that He cannot forgive. Sometimes Christians make some of the most miserable people in the world because they are God’s people who are living with unconfessed sin. When we grieve God’s Holy Spirit, we feel His sorrow. Our relationship with God doesn’t have to remain broken. Just like David who found His way back to God, we take the same path that is there for us. We must admit that when we sin, we are hurting Him and have betrayed His trust. Let us direct our steps back toward our heart’s home, which is God Himself, for only in Him can we find ourselves.
