Leonardo of Pisa, a.k.a Fibonacci, famous for the discovery of the Fibonacci sequence spent many years in Africa, studying under Muslim teachers. According to his most popular book, the Liber Abaci, his father was the chief magistrate of the Pisan trading colony at Bugia in Algeria. He as the son of a merchant was required to study mathematics. Fortunately for him, his teachers were Muslims who encouraged him to introduce the Arabic numerals to Europe for the first time.
