Patricia Dilley states that Elizabeth’s middle or first married name is McCanlbey. There is no documented proof of this at prsent, but I am investigating to find out for sure. The following notes are from Dixie: Rumors and speculations about Elizabeth’s heritage is still in question. Some of the cousins says they heard that both Garrett and Elizabeth were Cherokee Indians adopted by their respective families. Some cousins say that Elizabeth was the adopted indian. According to correspondence with Tina Rue, she states and I quote; My grandmother does not remember much about Garrett and Elizabeth. Bertha did tell my grandmother that her great-grandmother, which would be Elizabeth Herron, would speak indian language when ever she got mad. Then she went on to say that Bertha was raised by her grandmother Frances McCauley, that would be the daughter of Elizabeth Herron McCauley. The family is unsure why. She also stated Grandma said that Bertha, her mom, and Mary Alice, her grandma, didn’t talk much about the family history. Dixie states; I find the same kind of practice exists in my direct line too. My Mother said she heard from her Grandmother, which was Mary Ann Evans Bolton that the family did not talk about it much because instead of finding the indian children, they actually went in and kidnapped the children from their parents. All our grandparents have their theory. I do believe that the adopted parents of these indian children probably told them they were found. They certainly would not admit that they kidnapped them, if they did? Jacob Herron, Sr. Person note: According to the Randolph Co. Census of 1850 the household of Jacob Herron consisted of the following people, Lucy Herron age 38 years, Garrett Herron age 15 years, William Herron age 12 years, John Herron age 10 years, Jacob Herron age 8 years, Elizabeth Herron age 6 years, Charles Herron age 5 years, Mary J. Mary Herron Person note: [no notes] May Herron Person note: [no notes] America Herron Person note: It is possible that America Herron was not the daughter of Willis and Elizabeth. She could have abeen their Granddaughter instead. It seems possible that America was the illegitimate daughter of Mary Herron. According to the 1860 Randolph County Census, Mary Herron and America Heron are living in Jonathon Currence’s household. However, America is listed in several places as a child of Willis and Elizabeth. In the 1850 Census, she is living with Willis and Elizabeth in Jacob Herron’s household.
