Lesley Gore was a hit-maker in the early and mid 1960s. But by the time California Nights peaked at #16 in March 1967, her pop appeal was declining. In fact, this was her last Top 20 hit. I find it surprising that California Nights didnt perform better on the charts. The song is both pleasantly pop and seriously sophisticated. For many Gore fans, this is their favorite tune by the artist. Written by Marvin Hamlisch and Howard Liebling, the tune was lavishly produced by Bob Crewe with a spell-binding vocal performance from Ms. Gore. And the sound of this one has many elements that hold up well today. The charts were crowded with pop, rock, soul, and country acts and songs in 1967. Unfortunately, Lesley Gores California Nights didnt compete as well as might have a year or so earlier. For reference, the song spent two weeks in its #16 peak position while Penny Lane from The Beatles and Happy Together by The Turtles traded places at #1.
