Lesson 2: The Heifers Along with Red, 54, 39 and 2 steers I bought 4 little 1 yr old Heifers. Poor things - again, didnt know how close they were to their moms so they came alone and then clung around the cows. One was a Houdini and got out and was headed down the road headed home the first morning, but since that time I have never had a cow OUT. 89 is the friendliest thing there is - she is always getting her picture taken getting her neck rubbed because she loves it and puts her whole body & soul into enjoying it. 89 Taught me NOT to play with the cows - I used to run with them until she did the universal PLAY WITH ME side ram and sent me flying on my keister. I now NEVER play with the cows and do not accept any head butting behavior of any type. She didnt hurt me - wasnt trying to - but she COULD have. 98 was always more shy. She has halo horns - they come around in a curve to the front and look like a halo on her head. She is much more friendly now. She was never unfriendly, just reserved. 107 has always been RWs favorite - she has a sweet face and long eyelashes and always looks like a bashful girl. Because he shows her so much favor she much prefers him to me. 111 - the aspergers cow. has always been a loner and more and more didnt even play with the other heifers. She started to get aggressive with me and I was getting afraid of her. I had basically decided to cull her. However, in the TEMPLE GRANDIN movie she says when you have aspergers stimulation HURTS - it doesnt just irritate - its painful. So I totally changed how I worked with her - everything is slow. I NEVER surprise her. Everything is quiet and gentle. And she responded and is just a lovely cow now. Still a little bit of a loner but friends with 107 and kind to the other cows and likes brushing and patting on her terms. She taught me how to handle cows - I am much slower, quieter and gentler with all animals now than I was - and get more and more that way as time goes on. They all love it. I owe a lot to 111.
