Lesson 5: Obstacles to IT pedagogical practice - TopicsExpress

Lesson 5: Obstacles to IT pedagogical practice Especially for educators living in developing or peasant economies, objections are likely to be heard such as that the use of the computer is time-consuming and expensive. Besides there is also the danger of a technology-centered classroom along the fear that computers may soon replace teachers. Virtue is in moderation and so, there is truly a need for teachers to balance their time for the preparation and application of instructional tools. Through wise technical advice, schools can also acquire the most appropriate computer hardware and software. At the same time, training should ensure that the use of ET is fitted to learning objectives. In addition, teachers should acquire computer skills for so that they can serve as models in integrating educational technology in the teaching-learning process. IGURE 1- SYSTEMATIC INSTRUCTIONAL PLANNING PROCESS Following modern trends in technology-related education, schools should now foster a student-centered learning environment, wherein students are given leeway to use computer information sources in their assignments, reports and presentation in written, visual, or dramatic forms. All these suggestions show that teachers and schools can no longer avoid the integration of educational technology in instruction. Especially in the coming years, when portable and mobile computing will make computing activities easier to perform, the approaches to classroom pedagogy must change. And with continuing change in high-speed communication, mass storage libraries, educators should be open for more drastic changes in the years ahead. Lesson 5: Obstacles to IT pedagogical practice (Reflection) “Obstacles to IT pedagogical practice”, a lesson that presents the issue that the use of technology, specifically the computer, is accordingly time-consuming and expensive. There are a lot of objections in using the computer specially that we belong to a developing and peasant economy as they call it. Though in some ways it is true that it is time consuming and expensive, we can’t also deny the fact that we will benefit from it especially in the field of teaching. Virtue is in moderation and so, there is truly a need for teachers to balance their time for the preparation and application of instructional tools. Through wise technical advice, schools can also acquire the most appropriate computer hardware and software. Teachers should acquire computer skills so that they can serve as models in integrating educational technology in the teaching-learning process. We should remember that we must foster a student-centered learning environment where the students are given a scope and freedom to use computer information sources for their assignments, reports, presentations, and the likes. By these we are guided that we can no longer avoid the integration of educational technology in teaching and we must be open for more radical and far-reaching vicissitudes in the years ahead. I realized that instead of circumventing the use of computers, why not adapt it and use in a more advantageous way. We should be open-minded for changes especially that we are approaching into a more technological years. As a future educator, one way that I can promote a more interactive discussion is by using computer as an educational tool. I should be willing to accept and be open-minded for the drastic changes that will come for the incoming years. I should bear in mind that computers couldn’t replace the role of the teachers in the teaching process and should not be worried about it. Instead of dealing it as an opponent, I will positively view it as a partner and a confederate to make my teaching more interesting and interactive. Obstacles to IT pedagogical practice People living in developing countries are very much affected on less technology. It cans effects on their learning because of their status. Since they are still developing they cant afford to buy computers and their facilities. Their learning will just base on what the teacher teaches them. To remade this problem our government should make a program that can help this educators to capture and explore the real world and for them to have a better knowledge and ideas. L5 State-of-the-Art ET Application Practices Our educators today have become more aware and active in adopting a state-of-the-art educational technology practices they can possibly adopt as they look through the policies that support a new pedagogy. Personally, I truly appreciate the effort of the educators who advocate this kind of strategy even if it is difficult to implement it. With continuous implementation, this comes to reality. In addition, this is what I experience in my educational technology class. At first, it was not that easy to do this but with patience and hard work I am getting used to it, it is very exciting especially when I discover something. Today one can see a greater need for teachers to acquire not only computer literacy, but competence as well. Due to the speedy turnover of technology advancement, it is wise therefore for school administrator to decide on technology upgrading and together with this; the educator will utilize this technology. Aside from that administrator should not invest in technology hardware system that may become a white elephant in a few years’ time. More Recent ET in Education Recently, changes in pedagogical theory and practice arise. The contribution of the computer to pedagogy makes up for the good instruction. Owing to the development, teacher must therefore acquire or improve on their computer skills, as well as their computers-in-the-classroom skills. Trends that should also be recognize by educators are 1.School or training centre computer courses, to become a computer literate. 2.Following the call for developing critical thinking among students 3.Shifting focus from lower-level traditional learning’s outcomes, student assessment/examinations. 4.Recent teaching -learning models (such as contructvism and social contructivsm) Obstacles IT Pedagogical Practice Objection are likely to be heard for educators living in developing economies, such as that the use of the computer is time-consuming and expensive besides there is also a danger of a technology-centered classroom along the fear and computer may soon replace teachers Therefore, it is truly a need for teachers to balance their time for the preparation and application of instructional tools. They should be patient and wise to accept technical advice. In addition, teacher should acquire computer skills for so that they can serves as models in integrating educational technology in teaching learning process. All this suggestions show that teachers and schools can no longer avoid the integration of educational technology in instruction. Moreover, with continuing changes educators should be open for changes that are more educational in the years ahead. Especially nowadays, portable and mobile computing will make computing activities easier to perform; the approaches to classroom pedagogy must change. Educational Technology is enhanced with strong Pedagogy Technology has always existed, and there is nothing really new to teach our students. If we can consider this argument for a moment, and consider the implications of what it means for Education. All we need to do is follow prominent Educators on Twitter to find out more about the Professional Learning Networks we belong to, and a plethora of resources on the newest technologies, with the tips and tricks for students. Many great Educators also know that integrating new Technology into Good Pedagogy and Practice is a skill that requires knowledge, and understanding. There simply is not a lot of readily available research and discussion throughout our Professional Learning Networks that touches on Technology integration and the implications on Pedagogy. Technology integration alone does not equal higher test scores and more effective learners. In fact, as just one example, there are many students who are easily distracted by technology, and simply do not have the working memory to be able to process the pictures and text at the same time. There are very real implications to our students when we integrate the newest Technologies. As Educators, we do need to know what we are doing. We as Educators ‘should’ be using Technology. But we also should be promoting good Pedagogy. In fact, technology in itself is not new. Technology has always existed. Modern technology has been around as long as people have existed, and doesn’t just refer to the 21st century. Further, absolutely no one can deny that the newest inventions tend to engender or require the development of certain skills or attitudes. But is there anything really new? I would argue not. Good teachers know that abandoning good teaching practice, & allowing yourself to be distracted by technology results in poor teaching. Educational Research has pointed toward some of our lower levels of literacy across the Western world stemming from Educators having temporarily abandoned certain practices that will continue to stand the test of time, for new technologies. Others have argued that the spell check and word processors of our modern day technology, has resulted in generations of students with increased difficulties in spelling, reading, and writing, and critical thinking. If there is actually truth to any of these arguments, we as Educators have much to contemplate when it comes to integrating Technology. Perhaps before we jump into integrating the newest technologies, and the newest ‘flavour of the month’ perhaps, we also remind ourselves of the ‘truths’ that make us good Educators, and the research based art and science behind our teaching practice, and make sure that whatever tools we use in the classrooms, we do NOT abandon good Pedagogy to simply use a new technology in our classrooms. Further, human challenges will always remain human challenges, will always remain human challenges. Regardless of the date and time in history. New technologies do not automatically offset universals in the areas of human behaviour. They also should not offset good Pedagogy.
