Lesson for today Yesterday, we discussed phrase; an introduction. Also, we looked at its types, of which one of them is noun/nominal phrase, which we analysed intoto, that same yesterday. Today, we proceed to another type called ADJECTIVAL PHRASE. What is an adjectival phrase? It is simply a phrase hinged on adjective. I will use two approaches to teach you what adjectival phrase is. A. Noun phrase approach B. Adjective phrase approach Noun phrase like I said, yesterday, is a phrase premised on noun element. e.g. 1. Babatunde Raji Fashola. 2. The man in red coloured T-Shirt. 3. The Governor of California 4. Man of wealth 5. Man of honour. Dear, if you look at all the five above, you will see that they are all noun phrases. Look carefully at the last two, you will discover that they contain each a word convertible to adjective i.e. Wealth to wealthy in 4th example, and honour to honourable in the 5th example, no such word in latter i.e. examples 1-3. Now, the secret is that, before an expression or a statement can be regarded as an adjectival phrase, you must be sure of its convertibility first to adjective phrase. An adjective phrase is formed by modifying a noun with an adjective i.e. Noun + adjective = Noun adjective as in red house, hot speaker, four years, honourable man, wealthy man, etcetera. Do you now understand? Therefore, we can now say that Every adjective phrase is a noun phrase, but not every noun phrase is an adjective phrase. The figure of speech employed in the quoted statement is what you know in literature as EPIGRAM or APHORISM. However, once a noun phrase contains a word changeable to adjective, it is an adjective phrase. Hence, an adjectival phrase. In conclusion, a statement does not necessarily need to contain an adjective, before it could be regarded as adjectival phrase, I am saying is that it must contain a word changeable to an adjective like I have said above. Now, the following are adjectival phrases: 1. The boy known for brilliancy. 2. Men of might. 3. A boy with bravery. 4. The man with handsomeness. 5. The children of courtesy. I believe you understand all I have said so far, in this lesson? You can now on your convert to adjective phrases, these latter five adjectival phrase. Goodluck! Da Prof
