Let me just make it clear once and for all. Singapore Malays are NOT lazy. How could they be in a system that demands hard work and excellence in everything they do. Malays in this tiny island work long hours each day to keep their families alive. Even homemakers dedicate so much of their energies educating their children, preparing food for the family aside from other daily tasks. Some would even work part-time to contribute to family income. I would go further to say that Singapore Malays work so hard at the expense of their own health. Many have been in and out of hospitals due to occupational fatigue. I have friends who died in motorcycle accidents because they practically slept riding back from work. Some are suffering from stress and job burnout. Singapore Malays thus must understand the context of PM Mahathirs recent statement. It is not meant for us. It is meant for Malays on the other side of the causeway. I disagree with the PM that Malays in Malaysia are lazy. But I can understand why he said what he needed to. And this is not the first time he has done so nor has he stopped helping the Malays. By saying that Malaysian Malays are lazy, he is challenging them to show the world what they have achieved all these years. What they are made of. So brace up! Because we will soon read endless reports about successful Malays in Malaysia, some of whom, ironically, are former Singaporeans.
