Let me make this clear. I grieve for the families and friends of the two slain NYPD officers. But to be honest, I am far more angry than I am sad. Im angry at people who ignorantly chant about dead cops. Im angry at the murderer Brinsley -- with that frustrating anger at villains who do evil then seek to escape justice by killing themselves. And Im angry that there are people out there who, in their small-mindedness and bias, callously dismiss these murders by spouting foolishness like, This is what happens when people get fed up with being abused. Im angry because more people are now needlessly suffering. Because violence is not the answer to violence. Because ignorant people will now lump me in with wicked fools. Because reasonable people will now be understandably reluctant to call for the kind of changes our nation deserves. Because the position of those of us calling for reasonable reform can now be more easily caricatured. Because this needless tragedy will become the next political football and club to beat down reason and common sense. Because excessive force and quickness to shoot among cops will now seem even more excusable. Because it pushes the sides further apart and makes the chance of peaceful progress more remote. Because it advances the idea that violence rather than reason can be an agent of change. Brinsley may have shared a concern for police overreach and injustice, but he was not on my side. He was an enemy to the cause of justice and liberty. What he has done is inexcusable, unjustifiable, contemptible, and evil. He deserves no sympathy and anyone who dismisses, minimizes, or excuses his behavior is a fool and a disgrace.
