Let me show you something... Ideals are peaceful; but history is violence. Living in our current society necessitates that we blend one with the other. We may delude ourselves into thinking that we truly can be pure idealists. However with the fact of needing to pay (in some way) to be alive, we must be somewhat aggressive in acquisition of currency in order to maintain our personal idealism. Real change - often touted and desired by many, while brought about and accepted by very few - is the only way to make a difference. If it does not begin atop the mountain, we should expect no diamonds of hope to roll down to us as socioeconomic bottom-feeders. In the meantime, keep going for that headshot that provides you a comfortable leap up the social ladder; and if you want real change, stay the same when you arrive there.
