Let not your desires entrap you into sin! In one way, our desires - TopicsExpress

Let not your desires entrap you into sin! In one way, our desires are the root of all evil. Our unchecked desires lead us into sin. Bible says that “every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed”. (James 1:14). Our desires lure and entice us, and when we give in to them, they finally hook and entrap us. That is why God gave us an explicit command “thou shall not covet” (Exodus 20:17). Every sin starts first in the mind. Coveting lead us to all other sins. However God does not tempt anyone (James 1:13). Because God has given us free will, He has to allow us to pass through temptations, which we alone have brought upon us. As God is not the author of evil, He is also not the source of temptation either. Evil itself is the source of temptation. Therefore the problem lies within us. That is why we have to control our desires, which lead us to temptations. That means battle against sin should start in our mind. The real truth is that we choose to sin. No one can force us to sin. Bible call it as servant of sin (Rom. 6:16-18). Being tempted is not sin in itself. Jesus was tempted (Luke 4:2). The problem is not temptation itself but how we respond to it. We all have a sinful nature, we have inherited from our parents. However when we allow our sinful nature to control our thoughts and dictate our choices, it leads to sin. When a wrong desire is nurtured, sin is “conceived” like a baby in the womb (James 1:13-15). Thus when sin is completely grown, it gives birth to death. We all know that “wages of sin is death” (Rom. 6:23). Sin is like cancer. If you don’t deal with sin today, it will grow inside you and finally kill you. Therefore let not sin grow in you. We have to remove this cancer of sin from us. God offers us some solutions, how to fight these temptations. Just think how Jesus fought back the temptations put forward by Satan. It is written “I have stored up your word in my heart that I might not sin against you” (Ps. 119:11). Use “the word of God” (Eph. 6:17) as the weapon to fight against such temptations. In one way, sin begins with distrusting God. This is vividly shown in the case of Eve (Gen. 3:1-6). Satan successfully raised doubts in Eves mind about Gods character. Actually approaching the forbidden tree was not a sin, but eating the fruit was. Wrong thoughts seem to have preceded her sinful act (Gen. 3:6). Like Eve, we may think about the supposed “benefits” of wrongdoing. We may think “Let me enjoy this sinful habit for a little while more”. When we experiment with sin, there lies the greatest danger. Slowly our imagination and feelings begin to take over. Soon we seize the bait and fall into sin. Later we may wonder how it happened. The answer is easy: we let it happen. Nobody forced us into sin. The faithful God “will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out…” (1 Cor. 10:13). Let us pray as in Lord’s Prayer “lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one” (Matt. 6:13). As Jesus said “Pray that you will not fall into temptation” (Luke 22:40). By earnest prayer and living faith we can resist the assaults of Satan, and keep our hearts unspotted from pollution. Bring “every thought captive to obey Christ” (2 Cor. 10:5). Bring all your sinful desires, to the foot of the cross. Jesus can extinguish it and give you victory over sin. We have the promises, found in Gods Word, that offer us the assurances of victory, if we claim them for ourselves and cling to them in faith.
