Let us save Vivekanda Asharam in Brickfields! Vivekanada Ashram which is about 104 years old located on a piece of 0.4 hectare land in Brickfields might disappear if the Board of Trustees succeed in putting up a high storey building. It is historical landmark in Brickfields with the statute of Swami Vivekanada who came to Malaysa in the late 19th century. Some Indian groups have called the Minister to invoke the National Heritage Act of 2005 to save the iconic building. Meanwhile the Federal Territory Minister has that his Ministry might not be able to prevent the development of this land because it is private property. Of course, the Indian public are not buying this argument as the building is heritage in nature and all efforts must be made to save it for the future generation. As the support for the preservation of the Ashram is picking up, an online support group (called Save Vivekanada Asharm Brickfields) has been formed to get public support. One prominent businessman has said that he will donate RM500,000 and get support from others to take care of the funding for schools and charities if the project is nullified. The Chairman of the Board of Trustees Tan Sri Dr. K. Ampikaipakan said that the land needs to be developed to generate funds to take of Tamils schools and charities.
