Lets assume, for the sake of argument, that everything this woman says about having children is absolutely true. Lets assume that a childs automatic priority in your life gives you an understanding of love and responsibility that nothing else could. Lets assume that theres a particular kind of selflessness known to parents which is inaccessible to teachers, counselors, nuns, people who run soup kitchens, etc. Lets assume that theres a level of maturity and ambition which can only be attained by someone who has been forced to set aside his or her personal interests in favor of furthering the welfare of another. Lets just assume all of that is true, and those of us who have no children really do lead empty lives. All of us. Regardless of why we dont have children, or what we do and have that we couldnt if wed had children. In that case....wouldnt this essay still be a massively obnoxious, pompous, self-aggrandizing, grandiloquent, privilege-parading, look-what-Ive-got-you-suckers bit of condescending twaddle?
