Lets hear it for trees! Have you ever through how much they help us in our daily lives and the support they bring to high-density urban living such is London? The i-tree project aims to create a monetary value for trees, which includes reliable data on their carbon-capture capacity, their ability to mitigate pollution, the cooling effect they have on buildings, and other serves they provide to our city. This is the nitty-gritty of ecosystem services, and a hoped-for end result will be the valuing of urban trees in parity with other urban infrastructure, such as street lighting and pavements, in importance. Londons forest will be surveyed this summer, and if you have a garden you may be sent a letter by the forestry commission asking for access for volunteer surveyors to have a look at your trees. You may see people with measuring tapes and bits of chalk working in your local area, in parks or in the street. Im going to be one of them, and if you see people doing this in hi-viz jackets with a forestry commission logo on them, stop and say hi, and say thank you, as none of us are paid and all of us (300 people across London) are doing it for the love and respect of urban trees. A few new facts Ive learned: among the most high-value trees in London is a giant plane in Barclay square, valued at 3/4 of a million quid. A stand of trees is claimed to lower the surrounding temperature by up to 7 degrees in a heatwave. Broadleaf trees can soak up dangerous particulates in the air, cleansing it for us to breathe more healthily.
