Lets look after our domestic staff The news of arrest of a MP and his wife for beating their maid servant to death is shocking. There have been several cases in the past too of inhuman treatment to poor people by the rich. While emphasis is given on screening of servants by the police, no employer is screened to check his suitability. It is high time the domestic servants, and daily wagers, are protected from their greedy and insensitive employers. We earn lacs and grudge paying even a few hundred rupees a month to an ayah who cleans our house and utensils. We expect her to work even when she is sick, and are not bothered about her family obligations. At the drop of a hat, the lady of the house will deduct money from her meager pay for the days she has been ‘absent’. Same is the case with the daily wagers, be it on a construction site, or in a factory. Many employers do not even pay them the minimum wages laid down by the govt, and make them work beyond eight hours. It is also these employers who are guilty of employing child labour rather than helping them to go to a school. A bill needs to be passed to take the employers to task who resort to cruelty or exploitation of labour and domestic servants. And kudos to those who not only take care of their domestic staff, but also educate their children.
