Lets talk reality The Creation of more jobs, decent work and sustainable livelihoods for inclusive growth need us to look at obstacles to those goals. Education, patriotism and discipline are key to socio-economic development. Are our young people up for the task? Our history is that of a violent society, its time to move away from that culture and inculcate a culture of love, tolerance and discipline. However; these values cannot be achieved without learning how to relate to each other and respect the right of others to live in a peaceful atmosphere. South African young people are said to be self-centered and very much individualistic in their lives. It is funny because our youth have not yet been accorded a chance to choose role models outside entertainment industry and politics. Other fields of our lives and professions have sofar made no impact in their lives. You hardly find young people associating themselves with an academic or a professional outside entertainment, politics and the so-called BBE business people. Children in high school experience fast-paced social and educational growth that sometimes may lead them to grow to be irresponsible citizens if not monitored. Contrary this happens at a stage where patriotism and social responsibility can be nurtured on them, time to give back to community. Then questions arise; do we need to call on teenagers to register for community service hours before graduating or after? Will the private sector partner with public sector to provide these high school leavers with knowledge of what to expect in the work place after graduating. If after graduating, are we not putting those from disadvantaged communities at risk of being victims of ignorance? We need to bear in mind that due to past situation there are those who only see a library in tertiary institution. Community service assists young people to understand their intended fields of study and the opportunities available after graduating. E.g. those who want to study in the field of social welfare and development can be more advantaged if given a chance to volunteer in shelters for battered and abused women and children. Young people will also develop Ubuntu when given a chance to assist people who are destitute or of low-income families disadvantaged communities. Patriotism is one other element we lack. By exposing young people on the importance of our environment, we create a more conducive condition to inculcate discipline and patriotism in our youth. There is a need to promote Environmental study though complex it teaches us to be patriotic in extension take more steps towards social-cohesion. Together we move South Africa forward
