Letter I wrote to Opion desk at NY Times this AM (about Burger King) As a long time Burger King burger lover, I was dismayed and disheartened to hear of their proposed purchase of Tim Hortons and subsequent relocation to Canada for tax purposes. The reasons are many: 1. By relocating the headquarters to Canada, they are stealing from the United States and the American People the same as someone walking into one of their restaurants, taking a burger, eating and then leaving without paying for it. Since the early ruling by the Supreme Court that a corporation is a person (Trustees of Dartmouth College v. Woodward – 17 U.S. 518 (1819)..then these persons should pay for the same benefits everyone else enjoys in this country. These benefits include, among other things, security and safety and the rule of law. These benefits are not free..they are provided by the government..and paid for by taxes by individuals and corporations. (if anyone is in doubt of this..try setting up a BK franchise where there is little or no tax...lets say, Somalia). 2. .It is great that BK tries to lower its tax burden, we all do what is legally allowed.. But this goes beyond what is right and wrong vs legal and illegal. When this country was founded, it was legal to own a person as a slave. While legal..I dont think anyone would argue that it was right. It is time for Burger King to step up and take a stand for what is right..not legal. They have a responsibility to pay Federal Income tax..which goes to pay for the security and safety and the rule of law their 36,000 restaurants in the United States benefit from. It pains me to say that because of the negative inversion, I will no longer be getting my double cheeseburger deluxe (w/ lettuce, tomatoes and onions, light mayo and light mustard). And..I hope others in our country, those who support what is right vs legal, will join me. If Burger King were to agree to paying the original amount of taxes as they would have paid by staying head quarted in the US, Id be fine with that. But, I know they will not...so no more BK burgers. Ill have to go to Wendys for my burger fix. I wont be having it my way in Charlotte. Saddened in Charlotte NC William Kassebaum
