Letter from Montefiores CEO to the hospital community regarding the Peoples Climate March in NYC this weekend. While the institution isnt perfect, I find it impressive and inspiring that a NYC hospital CEO feels comfortable speaking with such progressive language. ----------------------- Dear Colleagues, Since its inception, Montefiore has been a forward-looking institution focused on challenging outmoded assumptions and partnering with like-minded organizations and causes that demonstrate a shared commitment to the concepts of justice and equality and benefit the greater good. This Sunday, the People’s Climate March brings together more than 1,400 unions, businesses, social justice groups, schools and environmental organizations working together to effect change. This demonstration, which is large in scale and in aim, is timed in accordance with a landmark United Nations climate meeting. It focuses on the principles of environmental justice and equality—representing the communities hit hardest by climate change. This goal is closely aligned with Montefiore’s unwavering dedication to social justice and giving voice to those who are not in positions of power. Clean air should not be tied to one’s income, neighborhood or zip code. It should be a human right, not a privilege—just as we at Montefiore believe that access to healthcare should be. This philosophy guides not only Montefiore’s approach to healthcare, but how we do business. Montefiore has developed numerous sustainability initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint and minimize any potentially negative environmental impact associated with the work we do. These initiatives include adopting environmentally-friendly cleaning practices; installing electric car charging stations; replacing our fleet with hybrids and our standard light bulbs with energy-efficient models; and investing in a state-of-the-art cogeneration plant that supplies the Moses Campus with sustainable energy. Perhaps you’ll join your colleagues this Sunday at the march, but if not, join in spirit. Sincerely, Steven Safyer, MD President & Chief Executive Officer Montefiore Medical Center
