Letter in Response to Tom Brake MPs letter of 20th March in the Sutton Guardian. More hypocrisy from Tom Brake MP. In his letter in your March 20th edition, he says, “I am committed to safe-guarding the future of health services for our local community” and “Our priority should now be to make sure GP’s know just how important it is for people to have quality health services located at St Helier. Please note his entire letter did NOT confirm his support to retain the hospital, merely ‘health services” this is because the coalition have introduced Clause 119 to counter the High Court decision in the Lewisham Hospital case. Note his words, “Currently, this only affects one hospital” When a politician uses words like ‘currently’ you can be assured that plans or ideas are there, it’s just that you, the electorate, are not being told about them. It is common knowledge that St George’s Hospital, where A&E services will have to go to, is constantly under strain. Just listen to UKIP PPC for Sutton & Cheam Professor Angus Dalgleish on this subject, his knowledge on all things NHS is formidible. As in all things LibDem look carefully at what they actually say, not what they want you to think they say. It is unbelievable that both of our Lib Dem MP’s Tom Brake and Paul Burstow voted to support the BSBV review of the NHS which resulted in the threatened closures of St Helier A&E and maternity wards. Now they have both voted to support the coalition’s attempts to legally enable the Health Secretary to allow take-overs of NHS Trusts which are struggling through lack of adequate government funding, but also to take over good and well run hospitals too, that is the real reason behind Clause 119. Bizarrely, Paul Burstow tabled the amendments to counter the change and then tried to scupper his own amendment after being offered the job of ‘overseeing the committee’ that would write the rules governing the closure programme. It staggers belief. You will not be surprised to learn committee chairs get paid extra money on top of the MP’s salary. To compound the NHS problems of lack of funds both our redoubtable MP’s voted to throw away an extra £10 billion of our money to the IMF to shore up the Euro in this parliament. This, when we have an annual budget deficit of over £100 billion/annum! Hence we had to borrow £10 billion to give it to the IMF. The money is there, it’s just the current 3 parties all chose to direct those funds out of the country. Remember the LibDem’s are the party of ‘in’. Tom Brake and Paul Burstow are trying to convince the local voters that they are all in favour of “saving” St Helier. Obviously what St Helier needs is saving from their duplicity and callous disregard of the best interests of their constituents. The Save Our St Helier Campaign slogan should be extended to read, Save St Helier from Tom Brake and Paul Burstow.
