Letter to the Editor - Overtime Audits 9/2/14 The Wilmington News Journal article of 8/31/14 (Police among highest paid city workers. p. A 1) raises important questions. No doubt, police have difficult, often thankless, challenging jobs, which often do not end at the bell, but what exactly are they doing to earn such huge paychecks? The public should know. It is their money. I suggest an independent audit of any agency with significant overtime expenses, to determine just what is going on. I witnessed first- hand the outrageous goings on in Delaware Department of Corrections (DOC), a truly out of control pocket of lawlessness, where manipulation of overtime pay was rampant; overtime is used to reward those who cover up the wrongdoings of fellow employees, and it is denied to those who dare to speak out, to punish them for their courageous honesty. We spent $13 million of hard earned tax money to pay overtime to DOC employees last year, while they openly laugh and joke among themselves about how they are gaming the system. Any independent audit will disclose this, just as any independent investigation would disclose much which the public would find hard to believe. Well, I believe; I SAW it. Lawmakers at all levels are always looking to fund worthwhile projects; how much are we wasting on overtime? Overtime audits make sense.
