Letter to the Editor - The Beach Reporter - July 31, 2014 Harbor Village questions Last week AES announced they would rid Redondo Beach of the power plant and replace it with the Harbor Village development that would allow for condos, a park and mixed-use. I am encouraged that the AES polluting, eye sore of a power plant may be gone soon. It sounds sensible on first read but the devil is in the details. The Harbor Village plan sounds like the rehashing of Heart of the City. This so-called ballot initiative is being marketed as big development or a power plant. That’s not true. The most recent 2014 report from the Public Utilities Commission will not allow the megawatt capacity that AES has applied for. It’s very likely that AES will be denied a new power plant permit for Redondo Beach. And AES’ newest Harbor Village plan proves there is no need for this power plant. Once again AES is out to dupe the city, and our mayor, Steve Aspel, is part of their deceit. No City Council member was privy to this plan nor given a chance to weigh in on its feasibility. The council cannot make any changes to this AES plan until 2025, and an Environmental Impact Report is not part of the process if the initiative passes. No one is against the power plant dismantling. But why is Aspel participating in a plan similar to one already rejected by the voters and under the guise of an AES marketing spin they call “choice?” Melanie Cohen Redondo Beach
