“Let’s go change over a poo drum!” said no one ever... It doesn’t sound like an appealing job – when you add ‘at an alpine hut’ the outlook changes... Last week DOC staff joined Marius (Fox Glacier Guiding and LandSAR South Westland) and Sam (The Helicopter Line) and flew to Pioneer and Centennial NZAC huts in Westland Tai Poutini National Park to swap drums full of excrement for empty ones. It can be nasty job – but it’s worth it to keep our alpine areas clean (and fortunately it’s pretty cold up there and frozen poo doesnt smell so bad.)
