Levels of Chemical Organization 1.Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass. 2.Biochemist classify matter itnno several levels of organization for easier study. a.The smallest unit of matter is the atom. Atoms are there to build more complicated substances in the body.In the body, most chemicals are in the form of molecules. b.Molecules are particles of matter that are composed of one or more atoms. Atoms are considered to be the basic units of matter. 1.Atoms are so small they can be observed only with sophisticated equipment. a.For example, tunneling microscopes and atomic force microscopes can produce pictures of individual atoms. 1.Atoms are composed of several kinds of subatomic particles a. protons b.electrons c. neurons .1The number of protons in the nucleus is an atoms atomic number. 2.The number of protons and neurons combined is the atoms atomic mass. Negativity charged electrons surround the nucleus at a distance. If an atom is neutral( carries no electrical charge), there is one electron for every proton. Electrons dont stay still. Instead electrons keep darting about within certain limits called orbits.
