Levison Wood has now returned from Walking the Nile. Were going back and retracing his steps looking at research underway in the countries hes travelled through. First stop Rwanda where land degradation is making it hard to feed cattle enough to ensure adequate milk production. An interesting collective of researchers from agricultural centres and a private plant technology provider company from New Zealand are trying to solve this by improving an existing drought resistant native grass of East Africa hub.africabiosciences.org/activities/research/302-climate-smart-brachiaria-grasses-for-improving-livestock-production-in-east-africa. A quick search of Science Direct for the grass species name reveals that in Brazil a form of the plant has been found to be poisonous to sheep sciencedirect/science/article/pii/S004101011400052X and in India another form has a high metal accumulation capacity sciencedirect/science/article/pii/S0925857413002942. Hopefully the form being used in Rwanda doesnt share these same features.
