Lewis is still with us. The University College, Dublin, vets - TopicsExpress

Lewis is still with us. The University College, Dublin, vets say that he has vestibular disease... but the cause and extent of it is not yet known. The condition essentially breaks down into two types - central and peripheral. If its central, there isnt much hope for Lewis and we will need to let him go. If its peripheral, it is likely to be an inner ear problem (e.g. a deep infection) and there is some hope. He is quite dull and has a slow heart-rate - potentially not good signs. His blood pressure is on the high end of normal which is also not a good sign. On the plus side, his pupils are reacting normally, he is reasonably comfortable and was even quite responsive/lively with one of the UCD team this evening. He is also eating well. They have asked to keep him in for further observation as at the moment his responses have been inconsistent... sometimes reacting to a hand approaching his eyes, and sometimes not (so we are unsure yet if if he can see or not.) The likelihood is that they will CT scan him on Friday morning. This should, at least, confirm if its peripheral vestibular disease and could also show if there was a large mass in his brain (which remains a possibility). They will also probably do a spinal tap, which should give us more information. In the meantime, the UCD team has promised us that they will take great care of him. (We may have laid it on a bit thick about how important he is to all of us here...) He has two vet students attached to him who will make sure he gets some TLC - Lewis does respond to affection and he will wag his tail a little. If anyone would like to contribute towards Lewiss care, that would be hugely appreciated. There is a Donate Now button on this page -and details on other ways to donate in the About section above. This video of our poorly boy was taken this morning - by Carole from Lilys Dog Rescue who has been an absolute star. Carole has looked after Lewis for the past two weeks, drove to Dublin this morning with him and waited for hours in Dublin before the decision was made to keep him in at UCD. I know you will keep him in your prayers.
