Lewisham Labour group have condemned the Mayor of London’s decision to force his Fire Brigade cuts plan through by directing the London Fire & Emergency Planning Authority yesterday. (5th August 2013). This means that the closures of ten London fire stations including the fire station in Downham will now be implemented by 16th September. Cllr. Alan Hall said: “It is a disgrace that the Mayor London, Boris Johnson has forced through the closure of Downham fire station.” “The overwhelming public opposition to these cuts have led to a reprieve for New Cross fire station but as a council we will continue to press for full fire cover for the whole borough of Lewisham. As we have said all along these cuts will put lives at risk and compromise safety through longer response times.”
