Liberia U-20 Intensifies Preparations Ahead Of Gambia Clash Meet FC Fassell In Warm-up Match Today Liberia Under-20 team, coached by former Lone Star Head Coach, Kaetu Smith will this afternoon play a test strengthen match against ‘fantastic’ FC Fassell at Antoinette Tubman Stadium (ATS) in Central Monrovia. FC Fasselle scooped both the Liberia Football Association Knockout title and the Cellcom Second Division Championship in the just ended national league (2013-2014 season). FC Fassell saw off Sensational LPRC Oilers in the semifinalof the Knockout competition and came from a goal down to defeat another First Division outfit, Watanga FC 2-1 in the final. CassellKuoh men also won the Second Division Championship in grand style, defeating Adolphus Dolo’sNimba Unitedin both legs at the ATS, to clench a 6-3 aggregate win. The Garnerville based club won first tie 1-0, followed by a 5-3 win in the return fixture. Today’s practice match is intended to examine Coach Smith squad ahead of the tricky tie against the Young Scorpions of the Gambia on Sunday, April 6, 2014 at the ATS. 25 talents are currently in training, but only 20will be selected to move to camp by Friday,two days to the crucial match.Sunday’s match is the first round first leg qualifiers for the African Youth Championship, with the return leg scheduled to take place in three-week time, on the weekend of 25th to 27th April.Thewinner from the first round tie over the two legs will move on to meet the winner between Ivory Coast and Guinea Bissau in the second and penultimate round of qualifying for the 20th edition of Africa’s second most prestigious national team football competition in the CAF calendar.Should LiberiaUnder-20 made its passage through from the second round of qualifiers that will be played in May of this year, it will face either Chad, Libya, Tunisia or Mauritania in the third and final round of qualifiers to be played August, later this year.The championship will be staged in Senegal next year (2015) between March 8 and 22, with the four top placed teams qualifying for the 2015 editions of the FIFA U20 World Cup, to be held New Zealand. Unlike Liberia, which is yet to play in the African Youth Championship finals, the Gambians have been to the tournament twice, having finished third in its maiden appearance in Congo Brazzaville in 2007 and the 2011 edition in South Africa.The young Scorpions have also participated in the FIFA World Youth Championship. The Gambiansmade their first appearance at the championship seven years ago in Canada and are eager for areturn on the global stage. Nigeria, Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Egypt, Gabon, Ghana, Mali, Morocco, DR Congo, South Africa and Zambia have all been given byes to the second round. The thirteen countries will begin their qualifying campaign in May in the second round of the qualifiers. The referees for Liberia versus the Gambia encounter are from Benin, while the match commissioner comes from Ghana.
