Liberias Foreign Minister, Hon. Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, putting forth the Liberian case in New York at the UN Headquarters at the first ever emergency meeting hosted by the UN Security Council on a health issue. The meeting was held on Thursday, September 18, 2014 in the wake of the devastating Ebola outbreak in West Africa. During the meeting, presided over by US Ambassador to the UN, Mrs. Samantha Power, the UN Security Council unanimously passed a resolution (2177) that declared the spread of the virus a “threat to international peace and security” and called on the world to send more healthcare workers and supplies to Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea, and not to isolate those countries. Preceding the adoption of the resolution, UN Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, during his deliberations, announced that the United Nations will deploy a new emergency health mission called United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER), to combat one of the most devastating diseases on the planet. UNMEER is charged with five key priorities including: stopping the outbreak, treating the infected, ensuring essential services, preserving stability and preventing further outbreaks.
