Life, God and free will Israel’s King David said, “…my soul thirsts for thee, my flesh longs for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is” (Psalm 63:1). The reality is life is “a dry and thirsty land” apart from God. It is meaningless. Ecclesiastes calls it vanity. The Apostle Peter recognized that and said to Jesus, “Lord to whom shall we go, You have the words of eternal life” (John 6). Actually, none of us, in our fallen state since Adam, really wants God (Romans 3:11), but He loves us and He wants us. He loves you who are reading this, and at times He moves in our hearts to seek Him. When that happens, we need to respond. Because it was the will of God to create us in His image with the ability of authentic choice, we can respond to Him or reject Him. That ability is something that our finite minds cannot grasp. However, because of it, Scripture exhorts “today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your heart” (Hebrews 3:5). The resolution to our problem of sin, our separation from God, has been accomplished by Jesus Christ. The payment He made for our sin is freely offered to anyone who places trust in Him as the sole basis for their standing before God (it’s “whosoever,” John 3:16). So call upon Him – “whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Acts 2:21). Jesus, God’s “unspeakable Gift” to you, is there for you; but a gift is only beneficial if it is received (John 1:12). That’s the decision only you can make. Does your heart “thirst for God?”
