Life as a ships JOD: 0230 - Night baker wakes you up wanting an emergency breakout for more shortening. 0630 - Galley wants more frozen eggs, and a couple #10 cans of corned beef hash just in case. 0800 - Muster on the mess decks and listen that ensign FSO rattle on about some gibberish for 20 minutes. This is some good coffee. 1000 - Argue with the the PO3 mess crank about whos in charge here. Lug 20 cases of breakouts up the length of the ship. 1100 - Get an 1149 from the Records Keeper, head over to the tender at the end of the pier and beg for a case milk. 1200 - Chief has you inventory the fresh eggs and bug juice for the 3rd time today. 1300 - Hunt down mess crank and kick him out of his rack. Time to lug another 30 cases of breakouts up the length of the ship. 1330 - don the parka and try and keep up with stacking 100lbs cases of frozen meat that the working party is throwing at you way too quickly. Oh crap, I dropped my keys! 1400 - 30 minute nap in the reefer decks, or on some cases of peach pie filling in a dark storeroom. 1430 - 15 min. break on the mess deck. Whats taking them so long filling out the 1282!?! 1630 - Go ashore and try to communicate with the local produce delivery trunk driver. Are all the nats on these bananas free of charge?!. Try to get a working party, but everyone is out on liberty. Bribe the civilian crane operator with a 5 gal bucket of Rocky Road, to place the pallets on the flight deck. Hunt down the cranks... 1800 - Galley wants a few cases of frozen burgers, they ran out of surf and turf. Wardroom cook asks you to go pick up the Dominos from the delivery guy at the end of the pier. 1900 - lug back 30 cases of returns the length of the ship all by yourself, that damn crank is UA! 2200 - Galley wants another emergency breakout of luncheon meat for midrats. Ugh... I just returned 15 cans! 2300 - Hit the head for a quick shower, stare in the mirror trying to figure out why one shoulder is bigger than the other. 0000 - Try to get some shut eye. Steal Beach tomorrow.... great...
